Bringing a Dream to Fruition

A lifetime affinity for Victorian homes led Mariah Kakis to this area.

It was love at first sight for Mariah. And she picked a beauty of a house.

Mariah and her partner, Dustin Moran, have been living in the home known by many as the Wallace House, on the corner of East Wallace Avenue and North Mercer Street, for five years.

A pat on the back goes out to the pair for restoring one of New Castle’s significant homes.

Dustin is the business manager for Tin City Catering, which is housed there and a sign on the portico says “The Belladonna,” which is the name of the airbnb the couple is establishing.

They were sitting on that porch when I arrived to tour the beautiful three-story home that was built in 1882. Back then, this most likely was a tree-lined street and the porch would have been a great place to catch a breeze and watch neighbors stroll by.

Mariah and Dustin came from Tucson to be closer to Mariah’s family in Cleveland and were enamored by the number of beautiful historic and Victorian homes in New Castle.

“They have so much character,” Mariah said. “All the old buildings are what makes New Castle, New Castle. Not too many places have this feel.”

This one has quite a history.

John C. Wallace, who built the home, was a prominent pharmacist at the beginning of the pharmaceutical industry, Dustin informed. John Wallace’s son, was a noted pediatrician in New Castle. The Wallace family owned the home until 1986. It was sold to the Women’s Shelter and “When we bought it, it was empty for two years,” Mariah said.

AN ORIGINAL PRODUCTION

The house is considered four square in design with a mansard roof and four rooms on the first floor, six rooms on the second floor and four more on the third floor, where they reside. The windows, floors and most of the walls in the house are original.

The first floor was completely redone by Mariah and Dustin and they are still working on renovations to the second floor where the B&B and a library will be located.

“Basically, this was demolition and mechanics,” Dustin pointed out.

The ceiling in the parlor — 11 feet high — was falling down and was totally repaired to showcase the ornate plaster details. Mariah, who is a professional interior designer, used her excellent eye and exceptional taste to furnish this room with pieces from the Victorian era, and painted it pink for a feminine feel.

A lover of antiques, Mariah has acquired quite a few pieces and placed them in various rooms. The fireplace, which is one of seven in the house, is the backdrop for the strategic placement of furniture like the ivory brocade sofa to the smallest of details like a delicate, pink lace table covering. A piano is in a corner and lace curtains are on the floor-to-ceiling windows, which are another feature that Mariah adores, particularly because they let in so much light.

Everything just fits.

SPECIAL TOUCHES

We stepped across the hall where a “butler” stands duty, to the gathering room with its more distinctively masculine ambiance.

“In the old days, women would have gathered after dinner in the parlor and the men would have gone to the drawing or gathering room,” Dustin said.

I’m guessing that was the scene of many brandy-drinking and cigar-smoking moments.

“I call this the hunting lodge because it has that feel,” Mariah said.

An ornate wooden hutch now serves as a bar.

Then there’s the eye-catching horse in the corner. It is a Tang horse and came from China
